To better learn music production and FL Studio, I set out to create a Synthwave song. Synthwave, sometimes called outrun, retrowave, or chillwave, is a genre influenced by 1980's video game music and movie soundtracks. It has iconic musical motifs such as gated reverb, synth drumsets, and warm mixing.

I used a piano synthesizer to record directly into FL Studio and built looping drum tracks and effects. I pushed for a length of ten minutes to allow the song to be used as background/study music.

For the video backdrop, I recorded game footage from the original NES (Nintendo) game "Rad Racer." Using After Effects to key and distort the footage, I composited the race cars on top of flying stars and a distant galaxy. Various effects were used to give a retro appearance and to mask looping. I also created a brief title sequence in After Effects.
