GRAPHIC DESIGN:

Embroidered Patches

I've always loved the outdoors. For this project, I designed an embroidered patch that would be used on backpacks and outdoors equipment. The patch would center around a fantastic mascot: a very civilized bear.

The design was based around an old community patch I felt could use an update. I updated the badge shape, designed the bear to be in perspective rather than orthographic, and added background details.

Within the wilderness background I included a constellation that had double meaning - its formal name is Ursa Major, which translates to "Great Bear." It's known better, however, as the 'big dipper' which is often used in navigation to locate Polaris, the North Star.

I worked with an embroidery manufacturer to create the final result, and also used the design on stickers. The patch's first run sold out, and I've continued to send the bear, along with subsequent patch designs, to outdoor enthusiasts in five different continents and most U.S. states.

I enjoyed the process and physical patches enough to make a few other designs.

One is a play on a famous panel from Watchman, where Dr. Manhattan expresses his frustration with Earth.

Another is an homage to the tentatively-named 'Anthropocene Era,' which some scientists feel could have its opening date marked by the Trinity atomic test.
